YOU

YOU
not a statement but a request.
As part of the Performance Festival ACT in Biel (May 2022) I immersed myself in the world of this city. It was clear to me that I couldn't bring a performance with me and then show it in some darkened room (without a soul/ story).
I didn't want to show myself at first, but wanted to show people the beauty of every corner of this city.
make space visible. How? Well through sound.
I walked all the bridges in Biel and discovered and tested them acoustically with singing until I discovered a railway bridge over a little river. the place itself here is so diverse: the water, the railway, the pigeons in the holes, people walking through , cyclists starting to sing loudly...
It didn't take much anymore apart from making people stop and play attention.
with recordings from this place itselve, which I then reworked and reassembled overnight, I created a new soundscape.
the performance starts shortly before noon:
the sound from the space, the soundscape I brought with me, flows in. Breath, moan, hum... my body descends into the cool spring waters.
I go to the middle of the river to perceive the sound, the mixture. Presence, it's just me and the space, everything else blurs. the water pushing past me creates a new background noise with which I initially react to the ongoing recording. after a while, unpleasant squeaking and chattering can be heard. Feeling unwell, hitting with the water to drown out the audio file by splashing, diving down after struggling to breathe, hitting the water again until only breath and pleasant tones can be heard.
now I can accept the space and respond to it properly. I'm starting to lean against the wall. it's an erotic struggle and act with this place. first resist it and then get involved.
my voice slowly joins in and responds to everything I heard and tries to please the room.
Stopped after almost an hour because I suddenly felt cold in my body.
So I tricked the audience into staying, with a mock attraction, but what they didn't notice was that it wasn't my performance/the diversionary maneuver that was actually wonderful, but the room/place alone that was what I wanted to show them.
